Instrument rating

Learn to fly by reference to the instruments and operate under instrument flight rules (IFR).

Now forming. Booking opens once instructor certification is complete. This is planned training. Nothing is bookable yet. Join the waitlist to hear when booking opens.

Who it's for

Private pilots who want to fly in clouds and reduced visibility under instrument flight rules (IFR), and pilots who want to fly with more precision. You must already hold at least a private pilot certificate with an airplane rating.

Instructor rating. Instrument training must be given by an instructor who holds an instrument instructor rating (CFII). Kilo Papa Aviation will offer it only once Kendrick holds the right instructor certification.

What it generally covers

  • Attitude instrument flying, including flying with some instruments failed
  • Navigation with GPS and ground-based aids, holding procedures, and instrument approaches
  • IFR flight planning, clearances, and working with air traffic control
  • Weather, including the convective weather South Florida pilots plan around
  • IFR regulations, emergencies, and decision-making
  • IFR cross-country flying

General FAA steps

  1. Hold a private pilot certificate and an appropriate medical certificate (or other medical qualification that applies to you).
  2. Train and meet the FAA's experience requirements in 14 CFR 61.65. Within limits, some training time may be logged in an FAA-approved flight simulator or training device.
  3. Pass the FAA knowledge test for the instrument rating.
  4. Pass the practical test (checkride) with an FAA examiner, flown to the Instrument Rating Airman Certification Standards.
About the training airplane. Instrument training is planned in a Cessna 172 with advanced avionics. Instrument training needs an airplane that is properly equipped and maintained for IFR flight, including suitable navigation equipment and current IFR-related inspections. The exact airplane and its equipment will be shared when booking opens.

What to bring or ask

  • Your pilot certificate, medical, photo ID, and logbook
  • A headset, and ask whether view-limiting devices (such as foggles) are provided
  • Ask which airplane will be used and how it is equipped
  • Ask whether any training will use an approved simulator or training device
  • Ask how training will fit around South Florida weather

General information only. FAA requirements are set out in 14 CFR Part 61 and the Airman Certification Standards, and they can change. Specific requirements will be confirmed with you directly before any training begins.
