Who it's for

Anyone curious about flying. Maybe you've thought about becoming a pilot, or you just want to see what a small airplane feels like. You don't need any experience, pilot certificate, or medical certificate to go on a discovery flight with an instructor.

What it generally covers

  • A short briefing on the plan for the flight and how the airplane is controlled
  • A walk-around of the airplane to see what a preflight inspection looks like
  • Time in the air over South Florida. If conditions allow, you may get to try the controls with guidance.
  • A debrief with time for questions about what flight training involves and how to get started

FAA steps

There's no FAA test or paperwork for a discovery flight itself. If you decide to keep going toward a certificate, the usual next steps are getting an FAA medical certificate, applying for a student pilot certificate, and starting training. See Private pilot and Get your medical first.

When a discovery flight is given as instruction by a certificated flight instructor, the time can generally be logged in a pilot logbook. Ask about this before you fly.

Weight matters in a two-seat trainer. Small trainers such as the Cessna 150 or 152 have limited room for the combined weight of the people and fuel on board. You may be asked for your approximate weight so the flight can be planned within the airplane's limits. It's a safety question, not a judgment.

What to bring or ask

  • A photo ID
  • Comfortable clothing, closed-toe shoes, sunglasses, and water
  • Questions! Ask what airplane and airport will be used, whether a headset is provided, and what happens if the weather doesn't cooperate
  • Ask whether the flight time can be logged if you go on to train
